Worship Ministry Update: July 27

2009 Vision: Impacting the Community Through the Arts and Acts of Kindness

    2 Upcoming events:

541 Concert (this Friday night: July 31)

541 (formally "The Guys") will be doing a concert this Friday night during the carnival!  The VBS carnival will be in the grassy area by the east parking lot from 6:00-8:00 P.M.  We'll be singing from 6:30-7:30, so we invite you to bring your unchurched friends and neighbors.  We'll be doing most of the songs we sang in May, along with a few new surprises.  You know you love country music as much as I do.

Mow and Go (Saturday morning, Aug. 22)

Since we're on a spending freeze, we won't be able to do the "watermelon give away" like we had hoped.  However, on Saturday morning, Aug 22, we will be mowing some lawns!  The plan is to mow some lawns within a one mile radius of FCCN.  We'll stop by their house, ask if we can mow their lawn, and knock it out in about 10 minutes.  We'll probably get some unchurched families to show up to FCCN as a result, and eventually they will become fully devoted followers of Jesus.  It should be a blast!

If you live within a one mile radius of the FCCN campus, please let me know of a few people who would be blessed by this: people who do not currently have a church home, and wouldn't mind for someone to mow their lawn. (I know that some guys are crazy about their lawns: very meticulous.  So if they are "one of those guys" we won't bother them.)

Anyone in the worship ministry or their immediate family is welcome to participate!  Let me know if you would like to help!  Here are a few ways to be involved:

       1) Bring your pickup truck, lawnmower and weed whacker and make it happen.

        2) help with childcare at FCCN while others, you know, mow.

        3) Administratively gifted people who want to tackle the scheduling.

        4) Prayer warriors: We'll set up a room at FCCN for some people to pray for soft hearts and safety for all involved that morning.

Praise Team Practice Tomorrow (Tuesday July 28)

We'll begin in the Green room since VBS will be in the worship center, then we'll move to the worship center around 6:25 after the kids leave.

Choir and Orchestra: begins Sunday night, September 13!

Yes indeed, you all have been asking about the date, so here it is!  Our first practice will be in the worship center from 6:00-7:30.  This year's Christmas music Will have drama, live choir and orchestra, special effects, the whole deal.  Anyone from 8th grade to age 95 is invited.  No tryout is needed and childcare is provided for every practice, so invite all your peeps.  Yep, I said it, peeps.

A new feature this year is the 1st-5th grade choir!  Our very own Suzanne Chambliss will be leading a 1st-5th grade choir that will join us for the musical.  The 1st-5th grade choir will practice at the same time (6:00-7:30) in the elementary big room (Fritz' area).  However, they will do more than just practice: they will also learn the Bible and have fun with Fritz and his team every Sunday evening.

Remember, the Christmas Musical will be on Saturday night, December 12 and Sunday morning December 13.

Worship Night: Sunday night, August 9 at 6:00 P.M.

You and your family are invited to experience God in a concert of worship on Sunday night, August 9, at 6 PM. All are invited! There will be some great music and interactive worship with the XP Band. Mark your calendars now! More details to come in the next few weeks.

Jennifer and I watched the "Twilight" movie yesterday afternoon.  Interesting.  Every high school girl is saying "yeah! awesome!" And everyone else on the planet is saying "what's Twilight?"

Worship Ministry Update: July 22

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

The dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday went very well!  Thank you all for your help!  I was able to serve on Saturday night, which was the first time I had ever really waited on a table like that.  My jobs in high school were more grunt work, like mowing lawns or moving boxes around a warehouse.  So maybe I'll be a restaurant server on Friday and Saturday nights!  What do you think, Karen Mooney, am I server material?

Seriously, I am constantly amazed with all of you: when a serving opportunity presents itself, so many of you jump in and make it happen.  In fact, we may have had a few volunteers too many one night!  We simply do not struggle with volunteers in the worship ministry, and it is a testament to all of you.  I say this in tears: it is such a pleasure to serve with all of you.  You have a servant's heart, and you are such a blessing to me.  Who knows what God will do with you in the future for His glory.

Special thanks to Jake Miller, who did a great job organizing the volunteers and working out the details.  Jake, you have the gift of administration and you used it well.  Like they would say in "Oklahoma," Ya dun good. :)

Special thanks also to Melinda Pipes, who did most of the cooking and made it easier for all of us!  If you see her on Sunday, give her some applause!  She said that "I owe her big time," and I agree.

I have no idea how much money we raised.  Ask me Sunday and I'll let you know then. :)

The Christmas Musical will be on Saturday night, December 12 and Sunday morning December 13.  We're working hard on the musical this week: Tom Dean is arranging the orchestra music, Jake is hammering out the script with some other volunteers, and I'm getting that sickening "Christmas is coming" feeling in my stomach.  Ready or not, here it comes!

We lost the volleyball game at CIY last week.  My fault: I knocked the ball way out of bounds on the far side.  Twice.  The students told me to lay off the weights. :)

July 14 post

Hey everybody,

Sorry this is so short. I am with the high school students this week at CIY. We're having a blast! Great worship (it's loud and rockin'), low humidity, and we're about to have our volleyball challenge this afternoon (wish you we're here, Scott Lehman). I've also taught the students the Ephesians 4:29 principle, and we're following it most of the time :)

Remember that today's praise team practice is in the high school room this week.

We'll be serving dinner for the Oklahoma musical on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Please be in the kitchen area over by the gym by 5:00 P.M. if you are planning to serve! Please wear a white dress shirt and black dress pants and black dress shoes.  The dress code applies here, btw. I'll be serving with you on Saturday night when we get back from CIY.

We still need some servers for Thursday evening, so please contact Jake Miller if you want to help! jmiller@fccn.org or 740-403-2962.

Our team is almost up for volleyball. I'll let you know how it goes... :)

Worship Ministry Update: July 6

2009 Vision: Impacting the community through the arts and acts of kindness : Warrick County Musical: July 16-18

Warrick County Summer Musical: We're serving dinner beforehand!

We're still looking for some folks to serve!  Please consider helping with these two opportunities:

   1) Wednesday night, July 15, helping Freddy and Melinda prep the food (peal potatoes, etc.).  Those who are interested in helping on the Wednesday prep night, that that will start at 6 PM and run until we get things finished.

   2) Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings: dinner serves to help serve the food.  We'll meet in the gym at 5:00 P.M.  Dinner servers will be expected to wear black dress pants, black shoes, black belt (if needed) and a white button-up shirt or blouse.  All clothing must also fit within dress code parameters.

Please contact Jake Miller at jmiller@fccn.org or 858-500 ext. 211, if you are interested in helping with this!   Or you can reply to me and I'll forward it on to him.

Praise team practice in the High School Room on Tuesday, July 7 and July 14 from 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Since the Warrick County Summer musical is here, we will practice for praise team up in the high school room.   It will be fun!  We'll have that small "club mix" feel for practice. :)

Value for the Month: Be Gracious with Criticism

James 1:19: "My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

As most of you know, I encourage people to come in and share their opinions (weird, I know).  I do enjoy when you all have an idea or something that you feel needs to be changed.  In particular, I get a glimpse of how God is working in your heart, and that helps me become a better worship minister.  Many of you have made requests or voiced concerns that have helped us make better decisions for God's kingdom.  So feel free to do that.  I've also noticed that when you all come into my office, you are gracious and kind.  I can only remember a few of the "angry people" that have ever voiced their concerns in a less than God honoring way.  That's a testament to all of you!

Something helpful is "the Indian talking stick" rule.  According to this rule: The first person talks without interruption until they have completely stated their opinion.  Then the 2nd person summarizes the first person's point of view in their own words.  Then the 2nd person asks if they have correctly summarized the 1st person's ideas.  If not, then the 1st person again describes their point of view.  The 2nd person is not free to offer their opinion until the 1st person feels like the 2nd person completely understands them.

Or you could summarize this idea with James 1:19: "be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." :)

I built a fire in our backyard Thursday night after we came home from Cmoe.  It was nice: crackling fire clear sky overhead, moon and stars.  I built the fire a bit too big, WAY too hot, so had to sit about 10 feet back.  It was still burning the next morning.  I might want to calm down a bit.

Worship Ministry Update: July 2

This is the weekly worship ministry blog!  If you would rather not receive this, just reply to me and let me know!  I'll take you off the list if I'm a bother to you. :)

2009 Vision: Impacting the community through the arts and acts of kindness : Warrick County Musical: July 16-18

Warrick County Summer Musical :  We're serving dinner beforehand!

You all have responded well to this!  Thanks to everyone who have volunteered to help!

Right now, we need people to volunteer to help serve the meal on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 5:30!  As I mentioned last week,  Freddie and Melinda Pipes will be preparing all of the food, but we get to opportunity to serve it to them!  I look forward to serving these people, extending a "cup of cold water" in Jesus' name.  The procededs from the dinner will help cover the cost of our Christmas Musical in December!

Remember, there are 3 ways you can be involved:

        1) Wendesday night, July 15, helping Freddy and Melinda prep the food (peal potatos, etc.)

        2) Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings: help serve the food before the musical

        3) Helping take phone orders from  11:00-1:00 and 5:00-7:00  Monday through Thursday at Castle High School, room 116

Please contact Jake Miller at jmiller@fccn.org or 858-500 ext. 211, if you are interested in helping with this!

Praise team practice will be in the high school room on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Since the Warrick County Summer musical is here, we will practice for praise team up in the high school room.  Same Bat time, same bat channel, just a different room.

    Vocal Team: ooh's and ahh's

As you have probably noticed over the last few weeks, our vocalists are adding a few more improvisations and lead parts during the worship set.  We have started to do that as long as it is done with 1) humility and 2) encourages participation from the congregation.  Humility is a right understanding of who we are before God.  A vocal lead part or improvisation must be done with humility in mind.  If I'm choosing to sing a lead part to draw attention to myself, I should remain silent. :)  Secondly, it must be done to encourage participation from the people.  As you know, we highly value participation from the congregation here at FCCN, and we must keep this in mind every time we lead worship for the folks at FCCN.  After years of leading worship here and countless conversations with many people, I've learned that they want to be involved in the worship: they don't just want to sit and watch.  Participation in worship is a very biblical concept anyway!  So if we're going to improvise, we must do it with humility and to encourage participation.

The Foust fam is going to Cmoe tonight: the first Thursday night of every month is free, so the price is right for us :).  I think I enjoy it as much as Nathan and Luke, probably more.  Have you been to that water room?  It's a blast!
