FCCN Worship Ministry Blog: August 24

Worship Ministry Appreciation Picnic! Saturday evening, September 12 at Cleo and Carol Holder's house: 10690 SR 662 in Newburgh!

Yes sir, we're going to try it ONE MORE TIME!  We tried 2 other dates, but of course, it rained BOTH TIMES!  Cleo and Carol will be providing the meat, I'll bring the drinks, you all bring the side dish but the tenors bring the dessert.  This is a way to say thank you to all praise team singers, band, media team, choir, orchestra, sign choir, drama and their families!  I am so thankful for your service, and it's just a simple way to be a living example of Ephesians 4:29.

Choir & Orchestra begins Sunday night, September 13  at 6:00 P.M.!

We're 3 weeks away!  I hope you all are as excited as I am!  We'll have choirs for Preschool-Kindergarten, 1st-5th grade, and the adult choir & orchestra for 8th grade through age 98!  No tryout is needed, just come out with your family that night!  There will also be programming for middle school, high school, adult Bible studies and small groups throughout the building.

Value of the Month: "I'm a 10"

1 Corinthians 12:18-20:  18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

Your best role is where you are both talented AND passionate.

Thanks for all the posts and new ideas from this value of the month.  Hey, people out there are reading my blog!  My love language is "acts of service," so I appreciate it.  Feel free to post more: http://fccworshipministry.blogspot.com/   Feel free to disagree or agree, or talk about something else entirely. :)

2009 Vision: Impacting the Community Through the Arts and Acts of Kindness

Mow and Go (This Saturday morning! Aug. 22 at 9:00 A.M.!)

We've got lots of addresses and I am very pumped about it!  I will have contacted all of these families before Saturday morning so they will know we are coming!  It will be exciting for us to drive to someone's property, mow their lawn in about 10 minutes and be gone!

Please meet in the FCCN west parking lot (by st. rd. 261) at 9:00 A.M.!  If you need childcare, Lisa Breidenbaugh and Lori Bosch will be in the elementary school big room on the second floor to watch any kiddos you may have.  Jake Miller will be providing his world famous refreshments for all of us mowers!  We'll be finished by noon at the latest.

What to bring: your lawn mower and/or weedwacker, gasoline.

Remember why we are doing this: we are purposely mowing a few lawns (for free) for people who do not attend church anywhere.  Our prayer that a personal touch will lead them to eventually become fully devoted followers of Jesus!

4th Quarter Schedule

It's attached!  Thank you all for serving!

Choir, Orchestra and 1st-5th grade choir begins Sunday night, September 13!

It's going to be huge.  Come and join us, you know you wanna. :)

Value of the Month: "I'm a 10"

1 Corinthians 12:18-20:  18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

Remember, your best role is where you are both talented AND passionate.

Okay, so what if someone is in a role in which they think they are talented, but they really are not?  I think the answer first starts with the relationship.  You must have a solid friendship with that person first.  Trust must be earned and built over time:  this is the foundation of every relationship.

After a strong friendship (with trust) is built, you not only have the clout but also the responsibility to lovingly share the truth with your friend.  But be careful to consider their temperament: fashion your statement to add the most value to that person.  Last week I heard one of the best quotes ever (besides the Bible) "The kindest form of management is the truth."

Think about it:  how many of us watch American Idol and cringe when the worst singer on the planet says, "lots of people tell me I sing beautifully." Simon then promptly squashes them like a bug.  Don't be too hard on Simon, by the way.  Think about all the friends and family who did not have the character to share the truth with kindness.  How much better would it be to say, "I'm not sure singing is the best role for you.  Would you consider that you are much better at this...."

Instead, consider how each person has a unique talent that can only be fully utilized when they close the door on something in which they are not talented.  How well did Michael Jordan play baseball?  Yikes.  It was only after he closed the door on his baseball career that the Chicago Bulls won a historic 72 games in a season and 3 more championships.  Yes, even the great Michael Jordan was passionate about something, but obviously not as talented.

Agree?  Disagree?  Come on, post your comments.  I dare ya :)  http://fccworshipministry.blogspot.com/

Praise Team Schedule Due Tomorrow! (Tuesday, August 11)

Please send me your praise team schedules for September through the end of December, including the Christmas Eve service (December 24). Please also let me know how often you would like to play/sing.  Once a month, twice a month, more or less than that?  Please let me know how God is leading you.  I'm up there every Sunday, but I'm sure most of you would rather not do that. :)

Mow and Go (Saturday morning, Aug. 22)

Let us know some addresses of some people who are unchurched that might be blessed by this!  We have 3 addresses so far, and I'm looking for more.

Also, please let me know if you would like to help!  Here are a few ways to be involved:

       1) Bring your lawnmower and weed whacker and make it happen.

        2) help with childcare at FCCN while others, you know, mow.

        3) Administratively gifted people who want to tackle the scheduling.

        4) Prayer warriors: We'll set up a room at FCCN for some people to pray for soft hearts and safety for all involved that morning.

Remember, your best role is where you are both talented AND passionate.

Eric Rudisill suggested something really cool this week.  I'd like to share it with you.  He says:

The discussion of talents/passions/gifts is always a good one.  For the organization, it makes sense - pick a direction and go headlong into it.  Clear example of the microeconomic principles of Specialization and Segregation of Duties to provide maximal output for least cost.  Where I find a danger is in the limiting effect that single-focused philosophies tend to have on people...   So while encouraging people to focus on one thing is advantageous from a management perspective (it certainly makes things easier on an org chart!), it can stifle creative pursuit and mask hidden potential in an individual...  So, I'm all for encouraging people to "play skillfully" and concentrate on a particular skill/talent/passion, but I think we also need to be very conscious of the need for humans to explore new opportunities and continue to learn in life.

I think a good example of this is our very own Doug Minor.  He is a very talented equipper and tenor.  But this year he has also learned to play the bass, and he does a great job with that too!  Bass guitar is another area where he is both talented and passionate.  He chose to try something new to become a better artist.  I'll all for that!

Next week I'll blog about: "what if someone is in a role in which they think they are talented, but they really are not?"  I'll also blog about: "what if I'm a 10 in talent but only a 3 in passion?"  Oh, I know, I'm getting really personal here.  Stay tuned...

Mow and Go (Saturday morning, Aug. 22)

We've had some interest with people who want to help with this!  I'm looking forward to the opportunity.  We do need some addresses though: people who do not currently have a church home, and wouldn't mind for someone to mow their lawn. (I know that some guys are crazy about their lawns: very meticulous.  So if they are "one of those guys" we won't bother them.)

Please let me know if you would like to help!  Here are a few ways to be involved:

       1) Bring your lawnmower and weed whacker and make it happen.

        2) help with childcare at FCCN while others, you know, mow.

Worship Night: This Sunday night, August 9 at 6:00 P.M.

You and your family are invited to eXPerience God in a concert of worship this Sunday night, August 9, at 6 PM. All are invited -- that's everyone, the whole church, your friends and neighbors, whether you are 15, 35, or 75! There will be some great music and interactive worship with the XP Band. We'll tie the evening in with the "What-If" project, and Adam Colter will have a few words to say. Mark your calendars now! Contact Scott Lehman or Eric Rudisill if you have any questions.

Value of the Month: "I'm a 10"

1 Corinthians 12:14-20:  Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

This month, I'd like us to do some self examination on where we are serving.  Your best role is where you are both talented AND passionate.

For me, I'm neither talented or passionate about cooking, so I don't do it. :)  It's a bad idea, and my children would agree.  On the other hand, playing piano is something that I am both talented and passionate.  So I try to do that as much as possible.

You may ask, so what about if you're very talented but not passionate, or very passionate but not talented?  My opinion: I wouldn't do those things either! There's a word for something you're passionate about but not talented: they are called "hobbies."  The words for talented but not passionate? "diaper change" :)

Seriously, here's the deal: the worship ministry continues to grow pretty quickly.  We have talented new people trying out for our team almost every week.  What a blessing from God!  So we can be more specialized in what we do, because more and more talent is coming in.  Do you want to focus solely on playing drums?  If you are talented and passionate in it, then focus on becoming a better drummer!  If you have no passion for keyboard?  Try something in which you are talented and passionate.  In short, focus on the area you can bring the most value.

I realize this is all pretty controversial, so I look forward to your comments.  Feel free to disagree!  I enjoy the debate.
