IT'S TIME FOR CHOIR!!!!!!

Last Sunday night was our first time to meet again as the FCCN Choir. As most of you know, Phill is leaving us. Though we are very sad, we rejoice with Phill and his family as they start an exciting new chapter of their lives.
This Sunday evening, September 23rd, 6:00pm, we will start rehearsing for our Sunday morning worship times and for Christmas. We are ready to welcome back all of our "old" members and are exciting to meet "new" members. With your help, Doug & I will try to live up to God's standard of excellence in worship. COME JOIN US!

FCCN Worship Ministry Blog: 9/16/12

Thank you all for the pleasure to serve along side you for more than seven years.  We have laughed, cried, sang, played, moved to a new building, built 2 story set pieces, seen video and lighting changes, traveled and performed at countless events in the tristate, put on concerts to benefit our Southern Indiana community.  We've seen hundreds of people baptized, and seen the worship ministry triple and quadruple in number while the church at FCCN has grown as well.  I came to you all as a young 20 something with a beautiful bride and no children.  The Foust family leaves you now with my beautiful bride, 3 young children in tow, and with me 10 pounds heavier and a few more grey hairs.  I wouldn't have traded it for anything to see first hand the Body of FCCN being the hands and feet of Jesus to families!  It's been quite a ride, and will always love all of you and will miss you.

I have accepted the call from the elders of Christ's Hope Ministries and Church in Fort Wayne to be their next Coordinating Minister.  Among my duties there is to lead the staff, congregation and to preach in a creative way every week.  I feel God's call on my life to not just preach, but to tell a Bible story in a creative way with music, video, lights, and a bicycle if needed. :)

Most of my family lives in Fort Wayne, so I think this is God's plan for us.  The Bible says that "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever" (1 Timothy 5:8).  So along with a clear call from God to preach in a creative way, I think this journey to Fort Wayne is what God wants for the five of us at FCCN who bear the last name "Foust."

Our last Sunday with you all will be Sunday, September 30.  I look forward to continuing to minister here until that day.  As you know, the worship ministry has had a biblical model of plurality of leadership for some time now.  So I am confident that our volunteer equippers, worship leaders, instrumentalists, singers, creative material volunteers, sign choir members and media team will do a fantastic job in leading the worship ministry until the next worship minister is hired.

Most importantly of all, remember that our home is not in Southern Indiana, or Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Our home is in heaven, and I will see all of you there.  In heaven: where we won't have to practice, plunk parts, practice chords or push buttons: no practice, just worship.

I'll see you there.

Phill

Choir Practice Begins: Sunday Night, September 16 at 6:00 P.M.

I look forward to singing with all of you again!  The elementary choir will practice in the elementary big room.  All of us 8th grade and older will practice in the worship center.

4th Quarter Schedules

Praise team, please send your 4th quarter schedule to Julie Gorman at juliegorman@wowway.com  Please send her your schedule by Monday morning, September 17.

Value of the Month: Matthew 18

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.  But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’  If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector (Matthew 18:15-17).

Jesus' command to us is clear: if a Christian friend wrongs you, your best course of action would be to go directly to that person and talk it out, without talking to twenty other people about it first.  Go to this person in love and do your best to "win this person over" (18:15).

Make sure you also don't take this out of context.  Look at what Jesus said right before this section:

In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish (18:14).

Can you feel God's love and acceptance for everyone in this verse?  Well, Peter doesn't seem to get it.  Because after Jesus finishes this section, Peter asks Jesus "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” (18:21)

I love Jesus' answer:

"I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times" (18:22).

It is in that spirit of love and acceptance that I urge you to "do a Matthew 18."

Value of the Month: Be Gracious with Criticism

What if someone criticizes you and it's not a valid complaint?  Do we have any examples from the Bible that deal with this?

Yes, we have a plethora. (insert "The Three Amigos" clip here. Come on Jason, you KNOW you love it!)

We have numerous examples of the Pharisees interacting with Jesus.  They almost always criticize Jesus for something.  The Pharisee's first critique of Jesus in Matthew was obviously not valid, and Jesus responds kindly:

"When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, 'Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick" (Matthew 9:11-12).

Notice Jesus clear tone here, he explains what he's doing, kindly, and continues to eat with tax collectors and sinners for the next 3 years!  So let's apply that to our life, if it's not a valid critique, move on with your life.  Don't worry about it.

That's easy to understand.  Case closed.  But...

Look at what happens towards the end of the book of Matthew.  Notice how Jesus' tone eventually changes toward the Pharisees.  After criticizing Jesus over and over throughout the book of Matthew, Jesus finally lets them have it:

In Matthew 23, Jesus pronounces 7 woes on the Pharisees, saying things like “You snakes! You brood of vipers!" (Matthew 23:33).  And Jesus goes ON and ON with this.  He cleans their clock about everything from their teaching style to the way they dress.  Ouch.

I don't completely understand Jesus' response to the Pharisees here.  I'm not sure how to apply that to my life.  Any ideas?

July 15 Worship

Here's the worship flow for July 15.  I think it's going to be a special Sunday.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jPK6tDP7krnlMP8fqXbC6OVRqINS7pmhOprApsqY_6k/edit

I need a few more guys to be disciples. It's a quick, non-speaking role. The commitment is 7:30 A.M. practice on Sunday morning, and both the 9:15 and 10:45 services. No biblical costumes, just regular church clothes are fine: dress shoes, dress pants, dress shirt or polo shirt. Let me know if you would like to help.

Value of the Month: Be Gracious With Criticism

If you're involved in the worship ministry, you're going to have to deal with criticism once in a while. When 1500 people watch what you do, well, it's bound to happen eventually.

So how do we respond when the inevitable criticism comes our way? Do we have any examples from the Bible to help us with this question?

Take a look at Exodus 18, when Moses' father-in-law comes to visit. And not only does he visit, he observes how Moses is leading the people and tells him how to do his job better.

Exodus 18:13-17: When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”

Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will. Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”

Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good."

Now hold on, really? Moses' father-in-law shows up and basically says, son, "You’re doing a lousy job." Basically, yes!  And Jethro is 100% right.  But Jethro also tells Moses that he needs to delegate. Moses is away from his wife and kids all day long "judging the people," and is not developing any other people to help him lead Israel.

Does this story bring to mind any Thanksgiving or Christmas family gatherings when your father or mother-in-law showed up at your house? Yeah? Ouch, okay, maybe this is a little too close to home for you. Let's get back to the Bible:

How does Moses respond? He is gracious with criticism. Verse 24 says he listened to his father-in-law and does everything he suggested. But verse 27 is my favorite:

"Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country."

So Moses responds graciously, but sends his father-in-law on his way.

Now, come on, there is more to this story, isn't there? Jethro just goes back home? That's it? Well, that's all we know for sure. But remember who wrote the book of Exodus: Moses did. I would love to get Jethro and Zipporah's side of the story too. :)

Since that's all we've got, let's take a cue from Moses' side of the story: be gracious with criticism.

But how about when it's not valid? Let's tackle that next week. Send me some ideas from the Bible on when people had to deal with invalid criticism. There are a few good examples. Ready, set, go! Post your comments below:

2nd Quarter Praise Team Schedules are Due Today!

Please let me know when you can serve on praise team: April 1-June 24

Choir and Orchestra Practice
Here's how it will shake down:
6:00-6:05 Opening Prayer and Value of the Month
6:05-6:20 Sectionals: "The Way"
6:20-6:35 Practice "The Way" and "God is Able"
6:38 What do you do in 2 minutes?
6:40 Prayer Groups
7:00 Practice with Elementary Choir: "10,000 Reasons," "God is Able"
7:20 Pray for "The Concert for Meth Awareness"

Value of the Month: Excellence
Excellence is doing the very best with what you have.  A good example of excellence is the tree that is blooming outside your window right now.  Go take a look at it.  Go on, get moving!  I know you're tired from daylight savings time, but get up and look out your window.  You don't have to go all the way outside, just stretch your legs.  There you go!  I knew you had it in you. :)

Notice the intricate design of the budding leaves and tender branches.  It does not have full grown leaves yet, but it's getting there.  A little bit every day.  Soon you'll be able to sit in its shade.  Because it's doing the best it can with what it has.

God does the same for us.  He gives us what we need so we can do our best for Him.  Consider the church in Philippi.  They were generous, they gave what they could, and God blessed them because of their efforts.  They were so generous, in fact, that that Paul said "and my God will meet all of your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).

So do the best with what you have.  And someday, some random worship minister might write a blog about you and not your tree.

NO Worship and Elementary and Orchestra Practice March 11

We'll meet again on March 18.

Value of the Month: Be on Time

How important is it to show up on time?  Consider what happened to Saul in 1 Samuel 11.  The Ammonites invaded Jabeth Gilead, and threatened to gouge out the right eye of everyone who lived there (11:1-2).

Not cool. Yeah, you may have had an eye patch at Halloween with a parrot on your shoulder. But for the other 364 days a year, you want both eyes, don't you?

The people of Jabeth Gilead wanted both of their eyes too.  So they sent word throughout Israel to ask for help.  If the men of Israel did not show up before "the sun was hot" the next day, it would have destroyed the military capability of Israel's archers (11:9).

Notice what Saul does: "Saul separated his men into three divisions" he does some preparation BEFORE he needs to be there.  Smart.  But also notice when he shows up: "during the last watch of the night" (11:11).  The last watch of the night is roughly between 3 and 6 A.M., so Saul and his men show up early!

The nation of Israel scored a great victory that day.  And that is partly because Saul does some work before he needed to be on the battlefield, and he makes sure everyone not only shows up on time, but they show up early.

So I'll give you an example of what I do every Saturday night so I'm at church for practice on time at 7:30 A.M. (long after the 4th watch, by the way).  Every Saturday night I set out my clothes and my breakfast (instant oatmeal: preferably with brown sugar or Cinnamon...mmmm.).  I put my shoes and coat by the door.

If I'm ever late, please don't pluck out my eye, arrr matey!

News about Brian

Brian Walker, our former worship ministry intern, has accepted a position at Suncrest Christian Church!  Here's what he sent to me:

Hey All,

I just wanted to let you know that I've accepted a position at Suncrest Christian Church. It's a multisite church in Northwest Indiana. I'll be the campus worship arts director for the Hobart campus.

Thank you so much for your support when I was an intern with you. I look back at my time with you as a great time of fun and growth in my life. If you would pray for me as I start this new adventure that would be fantastic. Especially pray for the hearts of the people up here that together we can worship God fully with our entire lives. Thanks again for all you've done. I hope things are well in Newburgh and that you all continue to make a positive impact for the Kingdom.

Brian

FCCN Worship Ministry Blog: January 12

Worship and Elementary Choir Begins this Sunday Night!

Here we go!  I'm excited to get together with you all again.  We'll be together from 6:00-7:30 every Sunday night except for Superbowl Sunday, Spring break week and Easter Sunday evening.  Drop the elementary students off in the elementary big room, and we'll see them in the worship center with us at 7:00.

Concert for Hope: May 6

We'll be doing another concert on Sunday night, May 6 to raise awareness about the meth and prescription drug problem in our area.  We'll have many special guests including the Newburgh Police Chief, Brett Sprinkle.  Anyone who worships regularly at FCCN is welcome to try out for a special number in the concert, tryouts will be on Tuesday night, February 28 in the worship center.

New FCCN Website

Guy Hall has done a great job putting together the new FCCN website!  It's still a work in progress, but you can check it out at www.fccn.org

Worship Choir and Elementary Choir Begins Sunday night, January 15!

Can't wait!  I'm so pleased with how the integration of the worship choir and elementary choir has helped us better be the hands and feet to families.  Here's a few of the songs we'll be doing:

Value of the Month: Integrity

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
  - Micah 6:8

I went with a group of guys up to the IU/OSU basketball game in Bloomington on Saturday.  It was loud and crazy at Assembly Hall!  A lot of people had on a t-shirt that said "We're back."  I like that statement.  Do you know why the IU basketball program is back?  It's "back" because the coaches and front office staff are doing things the right way: with integrity.  That integrity had been missing for about a decade, and all of that pent-up frustration was released at about 120 decibels at Assembly hall on Saturday night.  I heard the message loud and clear: integrity matters.
